It’s been a number of years since French video game developers Ubisoft asked Michael Fassbender to be the star of their highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed adaptation and expectations are soaring in the lead up to the release date during the peak holiday season. Studio heads over at 20th Century Fox have been keen to stir up excitement around the world and the recent release of a slew of new movie stills and trailers have brought with them a palpable sense of anticipation.

Set during multiple time periods, Assassin’s Creed jumps between a modern day and 15th century setting after protagonist Callum Lynch is unwittingly given the ability to tap into the memories of his ancestor; a Spanish assassin. It’s during his travels to the past that Lynch gets into many bloody parkour-style fights in a bid to save the future of the human race. The Assassin's Creed game series has sold over 80 million copies and has also been adapted into a comic book franchise.

Neither Fassbender nor director Justin Kurzel had ever played the game before they joined the project, although this doesn’t seem to have been an issue so far, with recent sources suggesting that the many writers and producers have, at the very least, a visual understanding of the text that they’re working with.

The huge following that the video game series already has is sure to boost the movie’s box office performance, but it’s still unknown as to how well another video game adaptation will fare on a critical level, even with 20th Century Fox implying that this could be the start of a new era for video game movies. For now we can just hope that this latest Fassbender-Kurzel project is the only way to get the great adaptation we’ve all been waiting for. The film will also be going head-to-head with Star Wars: Rogue One which will hit theatres at a similar time around the world in the ultimate battle for audience numbers and, hopefully, resounding success all around.
